TROPOS is an internationally leading institution aiming at application oriented basic research on aerosols and clouds and their interactions. The ground-based remote sensing working group of TROPOS has two decades of experience in development of lidar techniques, building of multi-wavelength Raman polarization and Doppler lidars, and application of the observations characterization of aerosol and cloud optical and microphysical parameters. Since a decade it applies active and passive microwave remote sensing with cloud radar and microwave radiometer to extent the observation capabilities towards deep clouds and precipitating systems.
